Read & Bell is Tory Read and Anne Bell. We create slow fashion, inspired by the unique nature of the handmade. Fusing the colours of a vibrant Pink City spice market with the muted hues of the Australian landscape, our pieces are designed for warm days and sultry nights, for a summer that never ends.
Our hand-loomed scarves are made on a wooden loom by women in West Bengal. The yarns we choose - hand spun cotton, linen and silk - are natural and the dyes are environmentally friendly. Each scarf is unique, taking two days to hand weave.
The ancient art of hand block-printing is unique to Jaipur. Chippas, a caste of printers, stamp lengths of cotton fabric with colour using hand-carved wood blocks. Taught this trade by their parents, who were, in turn, taught by theirs — each generation working almost exactly as the one before, going back at least 300 years.
