Read & Bell is Tory Read and Anne Bell. Designed in Sydney and made in Jaipur and Kolkata, we create slow fashion, inspired by the unique nature of the handmade. Fusing the colours of a vibrant Pink City spice market with the muted hues of the Australian landscape, our pieces are designed for effortless living and everyday adventures.
The ancient art of hand block-printing is unique to Jaipur. Chippas, a caste of printers, stamp lengths of cotton fabric with colour using hand-carved wood blocks. Taught this trade by their parents, who were, in turn, taught by theirs — each generation working almost exactly as the one before, going back at least 300 years.
Our hand-loomed scarves are made on a wooden loom by women in West Bengal. Our yarns: hand spun cotton, linen and silk are natural and the dyes are environmentally friendly. Each scarf is a work of art, taking two days to hand weave.
